DJ Lunik has written about her experiences of Fresh Blood last summer (2008)

I’ve been making the pilgrimage to Ibiza, for the last 6 years and impressively I can still remember most of what I’ve got up to on the island. I’ve experienced so many great nights and days, with people I already knew, people I had never met before, and people I didn’t even imagine existed. There are still some questions that I don’t have answers for, like, "Did I really see Jimmy Saville sunbathing with a tranny on the beach next to Bora Bora, when I stumbled out of Space one morning?". I may never get answers to those questions, but one thing I know for sure is that I will keep coming back for more.

When I won the July title of We Love Freshblood I was over the moon, and duly went out to celebrate, creating the phrase “holy shitstick” to punctuate news of my win. I was in Ibiza when the winner was announced, and was so disappointed that it wasn’t me. I’m not ashamed to say that a few tears were shed. But I pulled myself together, and made my way down to the Beach Palace in PYB, to see Dennis, who I’d spoken to through Myspace, and got myself a gig. I started at 3pm, and 9 hours later I finished. If I’d known I was going to play so long I’d have asked people to sponsor me, and raised some cash for wayward donkeys or something. I had an absolute blast, and I even attracted 2 beautiful dancing girls who I promised to go clubbing with after my gig, but somehow mislaid them. During the same holiday, I also DJ-ed at Orange Corner, before heading off to a crazy party in the basement of a hotel in Figueretas, where I almost forgot that I had to catch my flight home. Why is it that you always seem to find the best party, when you have to leave Ibiza?

Since winning the July Freshblood I’ve had more offers to DJ in my home town of Aberdeen, playing at residents nights, warming up for Jamie Jones and Dave Clarke, and playing at the launch of a showroom for BMW Mini. Future dates at Snafu and Origin are also on the cards, whilst I’ll be playing at The Wickerman Festival, in Scotland on 25th July. I’ve had 2 further releases of my own production. Real Life was released on We Continue, in November 2008, with remixes coming very soon, and Your Move came out on Ecology Recordings in April this year. In 2008, the film One Day Removals, which I produced music for, was nominated for a British Independent Film Award, and I’m currently working with Stirton Productions again, to provide the soundtrack for their next feature-length movie. I’m flying over to Ibiza, from Barcelona, where I'll be playing at MINUSA on 17th June, as well as attending the Sonar festival.

Once I touch down in Ibiza, I’ll head to the Beach Palace to play for an hour or so, where I also plan on hooking up with my virtual friends from DJMag forum, before heading to We Love. My first gig with We Love, at Space is hugely important to me. As a clubber it’s one of my favourite nights/venues, and I want to make sure that all those crazy people in the Red Room are treated to a great set, and of course that I am booked again. I’ll prepare for my gig at Space like I do for each gig I play, by good old fashioned practice, and making sure I know all my tunes back to front. I’m using Traktor Pro, along with a couple of Faderfox controllers, and just want to push the technology as far as it will go. Roll on June 21st................ :) x
