INTERVIEW WITH GRIMES’ CLAIRE BOUCHER – Interview by Richie Hawtin Featured

YOU ARE AN IBIZA VIRGIN, AS THE SAYING GOES. WHAT IS YOUR IMPRESSION OF THE ISLAND OF IBIZA?

HAHA like crazy parties and raves & the beach! I watched “Its all gone Pete Tong” in high school, that’s like the extent of my Knowledge. But yeah, sunny, warm, parties, etc... I’m not sure if it’s pronounced with a “th” or a “z”?

AT THE BERLIN GIG YOU INVITED A BUNCH OF FRIENDS UP ON STAGE ADDING A INCREDIBLE ENERGY AND FEELING OF SPONTANEITY TO THE SHOW. DO THINGS LIKE THIS ALWAYS HAPPEN?

I don like to bring people on stage as often as possible, but sometimes i play alone. I definitely prefer if people are on stage just cuz it gives me a lot more confidence as a performer to feel like i have a crew, and it usually gets the crowed a lot more riled up. But its important to me to be able to play the set by myself cuz i want ppl to know i’m not a singer, and i like having control creatively.

HOW DID YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH ELECTRONIC MUSIC. WHAT WAS YOUR POINT OF ENTRY?

The entry point was probably like some kind of main stream pop music. I remember being really into Darude in gr. 7, so i dunno maybe something like that. When i actually started writing music i couldn’t play instruments or anything, so it had to be electronic or it wouldn’t be possible.

I AM CURIOUS HOW YOU CAME ACROSS MY MUSIC AS PLASTIKMAN?

I think i was dating some older guy who was ‘artsy’ at one point in high school- but he showed me Plastikman and ilegally pirated your music lol. I started listening to it always on the bus. I recently did a 3 day Plastikman + Ketamine bender that changed my life!

HOW DO YOU FEEL PERFORMING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT IN-BETWEEN DJ-S?

That can be hard sometimes, but i’m pretty electronic so it’s generally not much of a problem (momentum-wise, i mean –sometimes its hard 2 put live music after DJs). I feel like the essence of the Grimes set is a dance party though. I’m kind of in-between a DJ and a live act.

WE ARE BOTH CANADIAN AND CANADIAN MUSIC IS STRONGER THAN EVER- ESPECIALLLY IN ELECTRONIC MUSIC WHAT’S IN THE WATER BACK HOME THESE DAYS?

Well, i think a lot of that has 2 do with the small and close knit community probably? I feel like most Canadian musicians know each other, and everyone is really geographically close 2 each other so ur always exposed to musicians and stuff. I literally just started making music because everyone else was doing it...haha. I duno, its also cold and shitty so there’s not much else 2 do. When ur just around so many people who are so desperate to just work art its hard not 2 be motivated!
