Mark Knight needs no gimmicks Featured

There’s no doubt that Mark Knight has gained a rapid affinity with Ibiza and its clubbers and manages to fill the dance floors week in, week out at BE at Space with Toolroom Knights.

Mark himself has a love affair with the island that spans over two decades after first discovering house music here, and has since gone on to put his romance to good use, gaining Grammy nominations and creating a benchmark for other house artists and DJs.

That’s in addition, of course, to playing a blinder every single week at Space. But the difference with BE and Mark Knight’s philosophy to many others is, very simply, that what they’re promoting is the music. No gimmicks, no novelties, no ploys. Just music – and people love it.  It’s no secret that Mark’s continually promoted his party as “substance over hype” and he firmly backs that up, adding that anyone who wants to be treated like a VIP will have to break the barrier and dance like everybody else.

“I always want to return and play here (at Space Ibiza) because it is primarily about the music. It’s not about gimmicks, it’s about a real passion (for music) and it isn’t about how high up the VIP guest list you are” Mark explains.

“I never got the whole VIP thing myself. People come to Space because they are real and want to get down.” He adds: “It is not about a big show. It’s about good music. If you have a big hype and nothing to back it up but a big stage show, people will see right through it."

“By all means, there are small elements that add to the overall effect and help me out, like the stilt walkers here. But they aren’t scared to get down and dirty with the crowds. They give it their all and are real. But as for a big production, that’s not me and it’s not what we do at Toolroom. We want to keep the credibility we have by giving the audience something to really dance along to, which is what they want.”

As do all the DJs who also want to have their own memories to take away - and Mark Knight is no different.

Mark said: “I love closing the night with loads of Balearic moments. However, I once played “With or Without You" by U2 and the whole club sang along. That’s something I’ll never forget. Not only was it a memory for them, but it was a memory for me.”

Sure to be creating many more moments this summer.
