Carl Cox had already said it beautifully two weeks before. “I love this idea that Space has the key to summer and the Opening Fiesta is when everyone is unleashed – all running through the doors like wahheeyy!”
Because that’s exactly what it was. Summer 2012 has officially been unlocked and with more than 20,000 music lovers coming together in one Space – literally – throughout seven zones at the Opening Fiesta on Sunday May 27th, the line-up exceeded 40 of the electronic scene’s premium artists which included Dubfire, 2manydjs, Nic Fanciulli, Orbital (live), Paul Ritch (live) , Wally Lopez, tINI, UNER, Mark Knight, Premisku (live), The Japanese Popstars (DJ set), and of course, Carl Cox.
Executed on one of the best sound systems in the world and combined with a spectacular stage-show, huge LED screens, lasers, and a visual stimulation like no other that was ignited even further with performers from another world plying the awe-struck crowd with a jaw-dropping display of stilt-walking, acrobatics and musically charged choreography, all of these integral forces united in an unstoppable power which culminated in the finest Space Opening Fiesta yet.
The sheer energy of the crowd was so strong that our hero Carl Cox couldn’t help but mount the wave on the Flight Deck and play for an unprompted and unplanned extra two hours to the fans that he loves. This spontaneous extended set might have been sparked after Space owner Pepe Roselló addressed everyone from the DJ booth and generated what was a moment that will go down in history, as thousands upon thousands sang Happy Birthday to Carl, the king of electronic music, who’s celebrating his 50th this year.
In the lead up to this, the hotly-anticipated oracles of machine-made electronic melodies, Orbital, entwined silver rifts and deeply emotive beats with their live set and executed a fireball of energy which engulfed the entire sun-soaked zone, when they slammed out reworked classics, outer-edge sounds and of course, their album title track “Wonky” to the sheer delight of thousands of rapturous fans.
Every single artist that played the Opening Fiesta each brought their own unmatchable input to the decks and with a line-up that encased the complete spectrum of electronic music – with a few unexpected surprises – there were an abundance of highlights.
These included Paul Ritch pulling out every stop possible for his live show; tINI masterfully crafting a beautiful, deep set that just made us want more; Dubfire timing techno-beats exquisitely, pinning the climaxes with exact precision on both the Flight Deck and later in the Discoteca – hosted by DJ Mag.
On the Terrace – hosted by UMF Ibiza - 2manydjs, Roger Sanchez, Mark Knight and The Japanese Popstars spinned out track after track of pure classic and contemporary gold.
On the Sunset Terrace, Mr Doris flipped fat beats and completely eclectic music without borders, in a set which took us to the very small hours of the morning. New members of the Space family like Richie Hawtin and Danny Avila also turned up to enjoy the massive party and to check out the unbelievable atmosphere that awaits them.
As the end of Space Opening Fiesta 2012 drew to a close, it was yet another testament that even after 25 years of putting together one of the world’s best parties at the Best Global Club, we can always reach a higher state, taking our music fans on a musical expedition to a place that’s never been known before.
