It is with great pride that we can announce, as of Wednesday 1st September Iain Taylor and his merry band of rEJEKTS will be appearing every Wednesday & Friday @ Space, Ibiza, culminating with their sets as part of the closing weekend “fiesta” on the 2nd & 3rd of October.
Iain Says “After 5 seasons and too much fun to mention throwing parties all over the island, it really feels like we’ve found a home here with Space” I’ve been coming to Ibiza since 1994 as a clubber but it wasn’t until a 2005 that I actually felt that what we do as DJs and Artists could really be understood out here. I’m glad I took the chance though as it’s been life changing, when I think back to how the Island was on my first few visits, to how things are now, it’s amazing what has happened. The Underground really has risen up and taken control, the quite revolution, but not so quite in this sense, quieter than tanks and guns (only just) and a bit more drawn out than most revolutions but far less aggressive and that’s the important thing.
When I first thought of putting on parties over here, Underground was the obvious choice, we needed start off in a small club to build something organically! I love that venue and the parties they were throwing with MR C and Craig Richards and the vibe they managed to create by refusing to advertise. At that time we didn’t even have a record label or any releases to promote, we just knew that something could work in Ibiza and it did. We had some great times working with Underground and it was a great launch pad for us to be able to start throwing our “off the radar” villa parties. Space is definitely my favourite of Ibiza’s super clubs! I had been coming every time that I had been to Ibiza, mainly for We Love on Sundays with a few exceptions to go and check out some of the Carl Cox or La Communidad line ups but it wasn’t until I had to the chance to play for We Love in 2006 that I actually thought something could work for us in that venue. I’d always loved the place, especially the Redbox and La Terraza, the way the whole place flows is unique, not only in Ibiza but the rest of the world. It’s this which gives you the added feeling of Freedom and the ability to move around with ease which is missing from so man other clubs, also the fact that it now takes place over 6 different arenas, the place is constantly improving and expanding which I like. We began to work more with We Love and also Carl Cox and carried on with the parties at Underground and the more off the radar stuff, we even, in true rEJEKT fashion got on board with the Zoo Project and helped them start up, playing most of the time for next to nothing and even getting involved with the promotion side of things to try and help them out (you reap what you sow and all that). I was having a lot of fun and really enjoying most of what we were achieving but I am a bit of a perfectionist.
I really wanted to start taking things to the next level and start to take more control over how and where we played.
It was at the end of last season that I made the decision to only do our own events for the foreseeable future in Ibiza. We started to look at which venues might be available to us and at this point, I have to thank Mark Broadbent from We Love for putting me in contact with the owners of Space, in what was, in my opinion a very open minded, kind and genuine approach to helping someone whom other promoters might have seen as potential competition. Mark has it right when he says “It’s the competition that keeps us on our toes Iain” and that is one of the reasons that We Love is still without doubt one of the best parties on the Island.
We negotiated the date of Friday 4th June to put on our first ever rEJEKT event at Space and it was decided that as it was a low season date and the week after the closing parties that we would just open La Terraza and El Salon. Space also kindly booked us to programme the Redbox on Wednesday July 21st as part of their midweek baby Kehakuma.
I was really happy with the 4th June line up, it is precisely the kind of artists we like to represent, people who are pushing new boundaries and have really started to make a name for themselves. A mix of local and international, cutting edge and established. These were Markus Fix (Cocoon, Cecille, Oslo), Motor City Drum Ensemble (Four Roses), Jose De Divina (Circo Loco / Climatic Sound) who we surrounded them our favourite homegrown talent in Ellesse & Pete Zorba (Kaluki Music), MITA, Uberlube, MIMO, Boris and the ever charismatic Zander. These boys deliver the goods for us every time and all bring with them a cool crowd of friendly, clued up and enthusiastic clubbers. The vibe was fantastic all night long.
It really felt like we had taken rEJEKTS to the next level in Ibiza after this. Over 2200 people came and partied their asses off to one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard in a club, every artist was on top form but Markus Fix absolutely smashed it with the whole terrace eating out of his hands by the time he took his bow, which unfortunately marked the start of my set! I have had to take to the decks after most of the world’s biggest DJs in my time, I’ve played alongside the majority of the cooler side of the top 200. This was one of those nights where I really had to dig deep!
Lots of our Ibiza friends came to support us, The We Love guys, Zoo Project, Circo Loco, Cocoon and lots of our friends and fellow DJs came down to see what it was all about. . . . Eyebrows were raised, something new could be happening here. . .
On the 21st July we programmed 3 good friends of ours in Darius Syrossian & Nyra and Pete Zorba to play alongside us in the Redbox. Again, there was a great vibe and we had a queue out of the door of our room all night long. By this point Ibiza was in full swing and our summer diary was almost fully booked but with a bit of date juggling and some favours from understanding promoters back in the UK, we have managed to free up most of September and secure the Redbox every Wednesday and Friday. Check the line ups, they are ridiculous.
