Steve Lawler (Birmingham, England) is one of those DJs who is able to move dance floors around the world regardless of tastes and cultures. Son of acid house and a leading member of the rave movement, Lawler came to Ibiza for the first time invited by Jason Bye to DJ at Cafe Mambo. Those sessions today, eight hours and seven days a week overlooking the bay of San Antonio then lead on to other ports, like Space Ibiza. The progressive house DJ Steve Lawler has been featured all summer on the Terrace for We Love. The popular DJ and producer will be back on Sunday 27 September for the closing of the club to demonstrate, just why he is one of the best UK DJs about!
You´ve played in Ibiza for a long time now. What does Ibiza mean in a DJ’s career?
On a personal level Ibiza means a lot for me in general, a lot of my personal life experiences have come from the island. For a DJ it’s still the hub for electronic music; I think it’s the most important platform for any DJ. Ibiza has always been about music. There is a magic about the island and its music that is difficult to put into words. To be honest if I wasn’t in Ibiza at the time I was starting out I might not have perused my career in the way I did. The experiences I had in Ibiza gave me the hunger to become a DJ.
This summer we have had the opportunity to enjoy your music on Sundays at Space Ibiza. How has your residency been at We Love?
It’s been amazing, the crowd response has been as good as it’s ever been, and I don’t know what Space does but the sound system just keeps getting better and louder year on year. And my personal relationship with Space and the We Love team is blossoming. It’s always a pleasure to play there because I am amongst friends.
Now, at this point in your career, what do the crowd expect of you?
I think that the crowd expect me to deliver, which I feel responsible to do. My goal is always to play new fresh music with integrity and I definitely do that’s my responsibility.
Viva Music. How is your label going?
It’s great! Viva Music is going from strength to strength. We are signing great new talent, including a guy called Leon – check him out if you haven’t already done so.
You will be at Space Ibiza Closing Fiesta on 27th September. Closing the Flight Area. What do you have planned set wise, any surprises?
I have been sick for a couple of weeks so I have actually been off with some free time at home, I have been bored out my mind! So I have been sitting in my loft going through lots of my old vinyl. So some surprises will include me actually playing vinyl, some of which are old beautiful gems, classic beautiful records I found in my loft!
And finally… What do you do to relax when you're not behind the decks?
I like to watch and get lost in films, its my way of switching off.
