Gelab, the new EDM sensation, is one of the youngest, most promising artists to play at Space Ibiza in recent times. The Menorca-born DJ and producer, from whom a great future is expected, is getting ready to start a historic season in the White Island with the release of his album ‘Zero’ on the horizon.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
For those that still don’t know you, how would you define yourself as a DJ?
I consider myself a versatile DJ, with great passion for all kinds of electronic music. That helps me adapt to any situation. I like my sets to be energetic and flexible, never sticking to a single musical style. Right now, I mostly play Electro House and Progressive House.
As an artist, do you feel more comfortable in the booth or at the studio?
Actually, these are two very different situations and I like them both, although I have more fun at the booth. It gives me the opportunity to show all my energy and enjoy a direct contact with the crowd, which is something I really appreciate. I'll have the chance to experience it again on July at the Ultra Europe in Croatia and I'm really looking forward to it!
Do you prefer to play in festivals or clubs? Why?
I enjoy both, although I’d say I prefer to play at clubs. As I said before, I love to feel the audience as close as possible, and this is way easier inside a club. On the other hand, playing at a festival is amazing as well: that sensation of thousands of people jumping to your music… well, it’s undescribable.
As a privileged observer of the clubbing world, which tendencies would you highlight this year in club music?
Regarding my main style, EDM, I sense a constant evolution. In my opinion, sounds are smoothing up, going back to a more progressive House. Personally, I appreciate that, as I was feeling that the reigning style had become too accelerated, even monotonous sometimes.
What have you produced lately – and what should we expect to come soon?
I’ve been locked inside my studio for a whole year, preparing my album ‘Zero’, and now I’m about to reach the finishing line. It has been a long wait, with many hard-working months, but I just wanted everything to be perfect. Mind you, ‘Zero’ is going to be my debut album and it will include my first singles, so I’m living in a mix of excitement and nervousness. I’m sure everything is going to be great in the end though.
ABOUT THE TOURS
You have played at many clubs around the world during the winter months. Which experience has been the most stunning?
In my opinion, the Ibizan crowd is the best. People come to the White Island to have fun and give their all every single minute, ready to jump all night. I’ve played in Ibiza several times and I can say nothing but thanks to its people.
Which artists have you felt a greater connection with?
I felt great with Tiësto, it was an honor for me to play alongside such an amazing artist. I’ve also been really comfortable in my last gigs with Shermanology and Dj Bl3nd. They are not just brilliant DJs but also fantastic guys, and that’s what is really important for me.
Which city and club have you enjoyed more - and why?
One of my best sets was, as i was saying before, in Moscow, with Tiësto. I had the chance to play at Space Moscow’s grand opening and it was amazing, the audience was completely committed from the very first moment and I felt so good. I was really delighted both with the club and the Russian people. I hope to go back there soon!
ABOUT SPACE IBIZA
What do you like the most about the Platja d’en Bossa club?
I think Space Ibiza is the perfect club. The sound system is simply extraordinary, every room has its own personality… and then there’s that essence, that ‘je-ne-sais-quoi’ forged throughout the years which both the crowd and the artists share. It turns the club into an absolutely unique place. When I was a child it was a dream to play at Space Ibiza and I’m so glad I’ve finally had the chance. I’m enjoying it as much as I can!
What do you expect of the upcoming season?
Most of all, to make the people dance, raise their hands, have fun all night enjoying my music… because I tell you, I will undoubtedly enjoy every single minute in there! [laughs]
Which sounds do you think will be the most successful this summer?
In terms of sounds, I’ll stick to my EDM style, with shades of Electro House and Progressive House. There will also be Deep House and Trap tracks up my sleeve, whatever that inspires me while playing.
And personally, which surprises have you prepared for the Space Ibiza audience?
I hope to be able to announce my first singles soon. That’s what I'm looking forward to the most… and I hope people like them, of course! [smiles]
