INTERVIEW WITH KEHAKUMA RESIDENT JAVI BORA

2014.04.08 - javi bora para webJavi Bora is a special guy. The Kehakuma resident lives for music, an unstoppable instinct that leads him to listen, produce and play it in a restless quest for excellence. This summer, Javi is going back to his residence in the refined Saturdays' party at Space Ibiza.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

For those that still don’t know you, how would you define yourself as a DJ?

I am a music lover who is also seeking to give its best when playing. I’m energetic at the booth and I always look for good grooves. My style is always close to House, usually an Old School one, although I sometimes manage Techno as well. I am always true to my style and my target is musical quality.

As an artist, do you feel more comfortable in the Booth or in the studio?

I feel really comfortable in both places. Each has its own charm. If I had to choose, though, I’d say I prefer the booth. That’s where I am in real contact with the people, where I must give it all. Also, I try my productions when I’m in the booth, so I can see the fruits of my labor at the studio.

Do you prefer to play in festivals or clubs? Why?

That’s a difficult choice. I’ve always enjoyed playing in clubs, especially in small rooms where there is constant contact with the audience. But it actually depends on the festival or the club. For instance, Space Ibiza is not small at all but it’s amazing to play there. I must admit, though, that I’m getting to enjoy playing in great festivals [laughs].

As a privileged observer of the clubbing world, which tendencies would you highlight this year in club music?

I’d say everything is going back to the origins, especially in House and Techno; back to how it used to be, say, twenty years ago, before the great trends… back to the roots, in a word.

What have you produced lately – and what should we expect to come soon?

I just released an EP called “Momma’s Tale” alongside Le Vinyl for Steve Bug’s label, Audiomatique Recordings. It’s being backed by great artists like Steve Bug himself, Technasia and Richy Ahmed, among others. This week, Laurent Garnier has played it in Pete Tong’s radio show at the BBC. Apart from that, we are going to release a track, “Memories of a Great Night”, in vinyl and digital format through the British label Moda Black. The EP “Feel My Fire” will come up in late April, with remixes by John Dimas and Adam Shelton, through the legendary H-Foundation label Surface. Also, before summer we’ll release an EP called “The Secret” through Robsoul – and it already is being supported by Reboot, Danny Tenaglia and Mark Farina.

ABOUT KEHAKUMA

You have been the Kehakuma resident during the winter months. Which experience has been more shocking?

When I played in Singapore, doubtlessly. It was such an underground party, held in a place with a special charm… it was great! Also, I did really like the audience as they genuinely valued musical quality.

You have travelled around the world with Kehakuma. Which crowd have you had a better connection with?

Probably with the people at the Fire Club, in London. I played for more than three hours in a warm-up for Apollonia and the crowd really got into my session. It was a great party, one of those you really enjoy and end up giving the very best of yourself. I must say I’ve always found great audiences in London, people who really enjoy House and Techno.

Which artists have you felt a greater connection with?

I’d say Daniel Bell, we had a great understanding and we ended up playing back to back in a Kehakuma party in Asia. I also had a great connection with Derrick May in Japan.

Which city and club have you enjoyed more - and why?

In the We Are FSTVL in London. It was an amazing festival and my set lasted for almost 4 hours, so I could really work on my session. What actually made a bigger impression on me was how huge the festival was – and most of all, it was my first session for Kehakuma, and I tell you, I will never forget that!

ABOUT SPACE IBIZA

You will soon begin a new season as a Kehakuma resident at Space Ibiza. What do you most like of the Platja d’en Bossa club?

Honestly, I like it all, that’s why Space Ibiza is chosen year after year as the best club in the world… it’s the first club I visited the first time I went to Ibiza, and a place I’ve always wanted to be. I’m really proud to be a resident in there. That club has a special magic – and a perfect sound system as well!

What do you expect of the coming season?

I expect it to be another unforgettable summer playing at Space Ibiza. Last season was amazing and I’m sure this one is going to be even greater. I’ll have some busy months from now on, playing at Space Ibiza and around the world.

Which sounds do you think will be more successful this summer?

The purest House and Techno. A return to the roots, to the most classical sounds.

And personally, which surprises have you prepared for the Space Ibiza audience?

Most of all, many new productions which I look forward to play. A whole lot of new music, several edits… actually, I’m really eager to make Space Ibiza crowds dance this summer!

QUESTIONNAIRE

An anthem for the summer.

I hope it is “Burn It (Vocal Mix)”, by me and Le Vinyl. I’ve got great hopes on this track!

Five tracks you always have in your suitcase.

I'd say "The Third Shit Baby", by Omar S; "Untlited", by Chez Damier; "Shades of Jaes", by Moodyman; "Quetzel", by Los Hermanos; and a track of mine I have much appreciation for, "Old Roots".

Your favorite classic track.

There are plenty of them! Just to pick one, I’d say “Can You Feel It”, by Mr. Fingers.

Your favorite DJ.

I really admire Laurent Garnier.

Your favorite producer.

Kerri Chandler, doubtlessly.

¿Vinyl or digital?

Vinyl. It’s warmer and better when playing.

Your favorite place in Ibiza.

Es Vedrà. It's so amazingly beautiful at sunset...

Your favorite club in the world (apart from Space Ibiza!).

Womb (Tokyo). I really enjoyed playing there.
