Cristian Varela, comes from a large family of artists (his father was a theatre actor, mother and grandmother were ballet teachers at the Lycee Français in Madrid, grandfather was a radio station manager, his uncle was one of the first pianists in the country), he starts his pianist and sol-fa career in 1984, taking his first steps in the music world at the age of 9.

In 1992 he starts his first dj residence at Porche Club and wins the award to the best elecctronic music dj in Madrid (Radio Vinilo – Carlos Eisman) . A few months later he starts up his dj residence at the mythical underground club Attica, combining house, ambient, techno and EBM. His gigs are outstanding so he becomes one of the pioneers within the underground culture in Spain.

In 1994 he releases his firs maxi El Cigarrito (Did.s.a) and becomes dj resident and manager, with his brother Luis Varela, at the afterhour club Zarabanda in Madrid. Later he wins the award to the best techno dj in Spain (Spain Attica Awards 1994). At that moment he starts touring all over the country and in some foreign countries as well (France and Belgium).

In 1995 Cristian signs for the multinacional Sony Music Entertainment Spain.

In 1996 he gets into most important lists and radio stations in London with his remix Madrid Acid Mix in Stay Up Forever Recordings (Chris Liberador).

Some months later Cristian signs up for one of the most prestigious techno labels Primate Recordings.

His numerous tours all over Europe, apart from countries like Japan, U.S.A., England, Brazil, Colombia, Canada, Czech Republic, Bosnia, Croatia… make him an essential dj in clubs and famous festivals.

In 2002 he starts up a new adventure together with his great friend and artist Marco Bailey: Pornographic Recordings and gets to the top of the rankings in the very best techno record companies at the moment.

Cristian wins the award to the best national techno DJ, again (bachatta Club Awards), to the best techno producer (Deejaymags Spain Awards 2000) and to the best techno DJ (DJ Onners Spain Awards 2000).

He is also classified as the seventh best producer within the first 100 in the world, by the American distributor Satellite.

In 2001 Cristian builds his new own label Donkeyhead Recordings where he plays other styles as electro, ambient or house, apart from techno and signs under the nickname of Carlos Duran. This same year he wins 5 more awards.

In 2002 he creates the Thursday’s techno sessions called Emotion Tech Club. Cristian becomes the official DJ at Final Scratch (Stanton) in Spain and participates in the new film based in the lives of DJs The Mix (Columbia Pictures) with his good friend John Acquaviva.

To sum up, more than 18 years of experience as a composer and pianist, and more than 12 years as a producer and DJ are only a few reasons for Cristian Varela to be considered one of the most important figures in the electronic music today.
